(American, b.1953)
Richard "Chroma" Wolfryd, known as CHROMA, is an artist and writer whose diverse creative output spans fine art, photography, poetry, and digital media. Born in 1953 in Newport Beach, California, he has cultivated a reputation as an art world maverick, producing 'Outsider Works' that reflect his empirical approach and commitment to self-exploration. His educational background, which includes a BS and an MFA, underlies a practice that thrives on discovery and introspection.
Chroma is best known for his colorful beaded Huichol alterations. These pieces stand out for their meticulous craftsmanship and dazzling use of color, offering a contemporary twist on the Huichol style known for its intricate beadwork and spiritual symbolism.
Wolfryd's entrepreneurial accomplishments include co-founding the independent gallery Wolfryd-Selway Fine Art in Los Angeles, demonstrating his significant influence beyond his artistry. Now based in Mexico City since 2009, he continues to evolve his craft, producing works that are lauded as some of the most compelling of his career.
Wolfryd's artistic philosophy has always been a compass guided by his internal muse, rather than trends or external pressures. He views his artistic endeavors as a commitment to enriching the world with beauty through his creative expression. Embodying this ethos, Wolfryd states, "I am not a great scientifically minded person; I am no extraordinary visionary; I am no pointed philosopher following and establishing new rules; I am no sharp-tongued critic, or self-centered wanderer, or mystic lover of all things and people. My main artistic mission is to leave the world a much better place by inspiring people through my creative work; giving all-of-me through acts of artistry & love; generously trusting that my point of view is 'just that' — a small 'blip' on the map of everything-beautiful (about life) that matters, and doesn’t...”
